Agios Sozomenos a deserted village in the Nicosia district, 3 Kms North of Potamia/Dereli and 6 Kms west of Pyroi/Gaziler.
According to Goodwin, Agios Sozomenos was named after an early Cypriot saint. Until 1964, the village was mixed, inhabited by Greek and Turkish Cypriots. In 1958, Turkish Cypriots adopted the alternative name Arpalık, meaning “place of barley.”

The village was always a mixed village. In the Ottoman census of 1831, the Muslim (Turkish Cypriots) population was slightly more than the Greek Cypriots (50.7%). In 1891 the Turkish Cypriot proportion increased to 69%. Throughout the British period, while the Turkish Cypriot population of the village showed a steady increase, the number of Greek Cypriots gradually decreased.

Amathus (Ancient Greek: Ἀμαθοῦς) was one of the most ancient royal cities of Cyprus, on the southern coast in front of Agios Tychonas, about 24 miles west of Larnaca and 6 miles east of Limassol. Its ancient cult of Aphrodite was the most important, after Paphos, in Cyprus, her homeland, though the ruins of Amathus are less well-preserved than neighboring Kourion.

Η Αμαθούντα ήταν αρχαία πόλη-κράτος στην Κύπρο. Βρίσκεται στη νότια Κύπρο, κοντά στην σημερινή Λεμεσό.

Σύμφωνα με τη μυθολογία οικιστής της πόλης είναι ένας γιος του Ηρακλή, ο Άμαθος. Το όνομά της προέρχεται ή από αυτόν τον Άμαθο ή από τη νύμφη Αμαθούσα, μητέρα του βασιλιά της Πάφου Κινύρα[1]. Εδώ έφερε ο Θησέας την κόρη του Μίνωα, την Αριάδνη, όταν ξέφυγε από τον λαβύρινθο. Εκεί, αφού γέννησε το παιδί της πέθανε και τάφηκε.

Οι αρχαιολογικές έρευνες έδειξαν ότι η περιοχή κατοικείται από τον 11ο αιώνα π.Χ.. Αρχικά ήταν μικρή πολίχνη χτισμένη σε οχυρό λόφο δίπλα στη θάλασσα, περίπου τον 8ο αιώνα π.Χ. κτίστηκε το λιμάνι, στα ελληνιστικά χρόνια το λιμάνι επεκτάθηκε και χτίστηκε δεύτερος εσωτερικός κλειστός λιμένας. Στην πόλη λατρευόταν η Αφροδίτη, της οποίας υπήρχε και ναός.
